From the Headmaster
Whilst it's been a chilly end to the term, the weather has not impacted the School’s operations nor the numerous activities that have taken place. Overall, we have had a positive end to Term 1 despite the challenges of influenza, which has been a consistent risk in over the last few months. Irrespective of the circumstances, the boys have finished the term well and we look forward to an excellent final week that will conclude with a full round of football and tennis fixtures with Gregory Terrace next Friday, 18 June 2022.
As I reflect on the term past, there have been several noteworthy events and achievements that have taken place. The beginning of this term saw publication of our Strategic Plan 2022 – 2026 and I thank families for their positive feedback about the final plan. The School’s executive team is now focussed on implementing the Plan’s initiatives and we look forward to sharing progress with you. Keep an eye on our new TGS Blog and forthcoming editions of The Blue and Gold for articles that will focus on the five pillars of character and wellbeing, teaching and learning, people, community engagement and stewardship.
TGS hosted the Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce’s Business@Dusk networking event in May. This was an excellent opportunity for us to showcase TGS to the close to 200 attendees and we discussed the future of education and its impact on the Darling Downs region, how TGS connects students with local businesses, and how our School provides multiple pathways and opportunities for the boys. It was great to have many TGS Old Boys in the audience.
We have also celebrated ANZAC Day, National Boarding Week and National Reconciliation Week. Honouring our Old Boys who have served in the military, showcasing TGS boarding and embracing our Indigenous culture are vitally important to our TGS community and it has been a privilege to be involved in these celebrations this term.
Congratulations to our music and drama students for their outstanding results at the recent Toowoomba Choral Eisteddfod. Our results saw TGS become Toowoomba’s most successful drama school, a wonderful achievement for boys and their teachers.
TGS has been on tour again throughout Term 2, visiting Goondiwindi, St George, Condamine, Taroom, FarmFest, Augathella and Blackall, where we also attended the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association Queensland conference. These tours are an excellent opportunity to visit past and present families, meet new families and catch up with Old Boys. The Term 2 holidays will see us on the road to Roma, Katherine and Darwin.
Deputy Headmaster, Mr John Anderson, will be on long service leave for Term 3 and we wish he and Veronique all the best for safe travels. Head of Senior School, Mr Mark Oliphant, will be Acting Deputy Headmaster and we will announce details of the arrangements for Acting Head of Senior School in due course.
I wish our TGS community a very safe and restful winter holiday break and I look forward to seeing everyone in Term 3.
Dr John C Kinniburgh
