From the Headmaster
Dear TGS Families
Along with my family, I had the pleasure of attending Midnight: The Cinderella Musical at the Empire Theatre on Thursday, 5 June. This spectacular production, brought to life by the talented students of Toowoomba Grammar School and Fairholme College was a true showcase of creativity and collaboration. I extend my sincere congratulations to Mrs Wendy Burns, Mrs Kellie Dixon and all the staff and students involved. Productions of this calibre are the result of countless hours of hard work and dedication. A glowing review has since been published by Stage Whispers and I wholeheartedly agree that the praise is richly deserved. You can read the full review here: Stage Whispers Review – Midnight.
Both the Director of Boarding Mr Nick Byron and I had the privilege of attending the Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association (ICPA) Queensland State Conference in St George in early June. The theme, Foundations of the Future, brought together educators, government representatives and community members committed to advocating for equitable access to education for rural and remote families. Key highlights included presentations from senior leaders within the Department of Education and the QCAA as well as a compelling keynote address by Dr Curtis Rayment titled It’s a Man’s Issue, which offered powerful insights into the role of men in fostering respectful relationships and addressing gender-based challenges. The conference was a valuable opportunity to connect with regional families and contribute to important discussions shaping the future of education across Queensland.
Earlier this week, I travelled to Brisbane to attend the Grammar Schools Meeting with the Chairman of the Board Mr Barry O'Sullivan and Director of Business and Operations Mrs Julie Payne. The day commenced with a welcome from Julie McKay followed by a keynote presentation on student wellbeing reporting by Elizabeth Jameson AM. The meeting provided opportunities for role-specific discussions setting the agenda for future collaboration among the Grammar schools.
Later in the week, I travelled to Canberra to represent Toowoomba Grammar School at the Giraadji Group Gathering held on Thursday and Friday. This network brings together leaders from like-minded independent schools across the country including Barker College (NSW), Canberra Girls Grammar School (ACT), Guildford Grammar School (WA), Lowther Hall Anglican Grammar School (VIC), Prince Alfred College (SA) and our own Toowoomba Grammar School (QLD). The gathering explored key topics shaping education today – leadership, artificial intelligence in schools, cybersecurity, ESG (environmental, social and governance) responsibilities and the evolving educational landscape. We heard from leaders in various fields such as Sarah Carney (National Chief Technology Officer, Microsoft Asia Pacific), Janice Law (Assistant Director General of Enterprise Technologies at Australian Signals Directorate) and Meg Brighton (Deputy Secretary, School's Commonwealth Department of Education). As always, the networking and exchange of ideas across schools proved invaluable.
We are also looking forward to the upcoming House Track and Field Carnival on Thursday, 19 June, a fantastic School event for the boys to display their athletic prowess, House pride and School spirit. As this is the final Blue and Gold for the term, I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank our TGS families for the ongoing support you provide the boys. I wish you all a safe, restful and enjoyable winter holiday.
Kind regards
Dr John Kinniburgh
