In our final Term 1 Assembly, I referred to Harmony Week (18-24 March 2024) and its importance as an annual acknowledgement of the diversity that exists in our community and at Toowoomba Grammar School (TGS). It is an important occasion that celebrates Australians from all different backgrounds. In many ways, schools such as TGS are small scale reflections of multicultural society and highlight the diversity of cultures, backgrounds and beliefs that exist in our community.
I spoke to the boys about how fortunate we all are to live in a society that is enriched by different cultures, traditions and beliefs. It’s not just about international food, music, or art that different cultures bring to our community, it’s about respecting and embracing the people who come from these different backgrounds.
At Toowoomba Grammar School we have 97 boys who were born in another country, 158 boys who speak another language other than English at home and we have 40 different languages used by TGS families. Language is just one example of the diversity in our community. All students at TGS deserve respect, regardless of our race, religion, gender or sexual orientation and I challenged the boys that the way that we can promote tolerance and respect is by understanding and appreciating our differences. Taking time to celebrate the diversity that exists within our School and our community and taking time to learn about different cultures, religions and traditions breaks down stereotypes and misconceptions that lead to intolerance and discrimination.
Embracing cultural diversity enriches one’s experience in the same way that languages might promote academic learning about one culture and its language. The language skills of our multilingual boys come in very handy when they are helping with the Homework Assistance Program at a local primary school that also has a culturally diverse community. Twenty-eight boys across Years 9 to 12 will benefit from the New Caledonia language and cultural tour that is currently taking place, with the boys expanding their knowledge and use of French. These students are learning to appreciate the richness of human experience beyond their own upbringing, cultivating a broader worldview that prepares them for life in a multicultural society.
Beyond academics, cultural diversity promotes social harmony and reduces prejudice. When students interact with peers from different backgrounds, they learn to value individual differences and form meaningful connections based on mutual respect. This lays the foundation for a more inclusive and harmonious society. There is also beauty and strength in diversity. Our differences should never divide us but rather unite us and we should take the opportunity to learn from one another and embrace difference. In essence, cultural diversity in schools is not just an asset; it's a necessity. By embracing and celebrating our differences, we cultivate a vibrant learning environment where every student feels valued, respected and empowered to contribute positively to the world around them.
End of Term 1
As Term 1 draws to a close, I wish to express my thanks to our School staff. Day in and day out, all staff strive to provide our boys with the best possible opportunities.
One particular staff member we must thank is Mr Mike Sharpe who departs TGS today after over 21 years of remarkable service. Mr Sharpe’s decision to leave TGS has been a difficult one; however, he will be moving closer to his family. In his time at TGS, Mr Sharpe has been a Junior School classroom teacher, Corfe Boarding Housemaster, Junior School Sportsmaster, and Deputy Head of Junior School.
Mr Sharpe's impact has been profound, teaching across all year levels, coaching various sports, leading camps for Years 2 to 7, and guiding international student tours. A highlight of his time here includes initiating an after-school activity program, which started with a fitness club and evolved into the comprehensive enrichment activities we offer from Prep to Year 6. His enthusiasm for Japanese cooking brought joy to the Junior School, with annual cooking days that celebrated food and language, fostering a sense of community.
A defining aspect of Mr Sharpe's leadership has been his unwavering commitment to the pastoral care of our students and their families, leaving a lasting legacy that we will deeply cherish.
I wish all of our TGS families a very safe and restful holiday break and I look forward to seeing you all in Term 2.
Fidelis in Omnibus.

Cultural diversity encompasses the variety of cultures, beliefs and traditions presented globally, contributing to a rich tapestry of human experiences and perspectives. By valuing every child's cultural background, we enable them to excel in all facets of life. Nurturing an environment of curiosity, open-mindedness and respect for all cultures will not only promote unity but also a deeper appreciation of the nuances that distinguish us.
Inclusion is about more than just words; it's about fostering a sense of belonging and acceptance for every child regardless of their cultural background. When children and adolescents feel seen and valued for who they are they can thrive academically, socially and emotionally. Valuing and understanding cultural diversity helps our communities benefit from a wealth of perspectives and experiences, enhancing our collective capacity for empathy and innovation.
As parents and carers, instilling an appreciation for cultural diversity is vital to equip young people with the tools they need to navigate an increasingly interconnected world. We can encourage them to embrace multiculturalism through leading by example, showing kindness and understanding that knows no boundaries. This will not only prepare young people for personal success but also for contributing to a world that views diversity as a strength. Through a collective effort, we can help to pave the way forward for a more accepting and vibrant future.
In this edition of SchoolTV, we explore how to embrace and celebrate cultural diversity with your children. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition and your feedback is always welcome.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the School wellbeing team for further information and seek medical or professional help.

Careers News
Throughout Activities Week, the Year 10 students have been on Work Experience across Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, Sydney and NSW and also the Northern Territory. The boys have had the opportunity to work in a variety of industries including health, sport, a number of trades, education and aviation. The purpose of Work Experience is to introduce the students to the world of work and to help the boys begin to develop the transferable skills required to become effective employees. Our hope is that the boys have a taste of different industries and jobs which will assist with career exploration and planning for the future. Year 10 is a significant milestone in our boys’ career journey as preparation for subject selection for Years 11 and 12 will start in Term 2.
Our Year 12s have also been exploring different careers by visiting workplaces in Toowoomba, hearing from employers at School and attending a mini–Careers Fair on Wednesday. We are very fortunate that our local community is so supportive of our students and are willing to give up their time to visit our School or welcome us to their business. We welcomed the Qld Police, Defence Force Recruiting, Bush Recruitment, Let’s Live, UQ Skills and UniSQ to name a few. TGS Old Boys were also welcomed back to share their experiences and career journeys.
Term 2 is already shaping up to be another busy term as the Year 10 Career Profiling and Career Plan interviews begin. We are also meeting with each of the Year 12 students to assist with post school planning.
We wish you all a relaxing Easter Break and look forward to seeing you all in Term 2.
Best wishes

From the Head of Junior School
We’ve enjoyed a wonderful Term 1 including camps (Year 2 - Year 5), excursions, activities, carnivals, NAPLAN (Year 3 and Year 5), a community Family Fun Night for the Junior School and learning progress across every cohort. I’m sure I haven’t fully captured everything but the sentiment is there; we’ve certainly made the most of the past ten weeks! The break period will likely be a welcomed one for many families and I sincerely wish the two weeks ahead to be restful and enjoyable.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to the Junior School Supporters' Group, in particular our President Mrs Tessa Chamberlain for her coordination of our Family Fun Night event on Friday, 15 March. This was the first event of its kind in the Junior School and was overwhelmingly well-received. There was a range of activities for all age groups including a petting zoo, giant slide, inflatable maze, mini golf, laser tag and fitness activities alongside food, friends, family and fun! It was a spectacular evening with a fitting finale watching a movie on our Old Boys’ Memorial Oval scoreboard. We sincerely appreciate the support from everyone to make this event such a success and it was a wonderful way to bring our community together.
This final week of Term 1 marks an important moment for the Junior School with a farewell to a much-loved staff member, our Deputy of the Junior School Mr Mike Sharpe following over 20 years of service to Toowoomba Grammar School. With equal measures of gratitude and sadness, our School community has shared with Mr Sharpe the immense value he has brought to everyone over his tenure in the Junior School. He is someone we hold with great affection and wholeheartedly wish him well. Below is an excerpt from the Headmaster's communication to the community (14 March 2024) noting Mr Sharpe’s journey with Toowoomba Grammar School:
“Mr Sharpe’s journey with us began in 2003 as a Junior School teacher of Japanese and Physical Education. At that time, the Junior School, then known as ‘Grammar Junior School’, comprised of Year 4 - Year 7. Year 1 - Year 3 were integrated into the Junior School in the years to follow where Mr Sharpe played a pivotal role in nurturing our developing community.
In 2005, alongside his teaching responsibilities, Mr Sharpe embraced the role of Corfe Boarding Housemaster, a role he dedicated himself to for 17 years. During this time he was also appointed to the role of Junior School Sportsmaster in 2007 and then in 2008, his current position as Deputy Head of Junior School.
Mr Sharpe’s contributions have been extensive and diverse, encompassing teaching across all year levels of the Junior School, coaching Tennis, Basketball, Futsal, Football and Cricket, attending camps from Year 2 to Year 7 and numerous international student tours. A notable accomplishment of Mr Sharpe’s was the establishment of an afterschool activity program that began with a fitness club and grew into the full complement of enrichment activities we enjoy today from Prep to Year 6. His passion for Japanese cooking has been enjoyed by all classes in the Junior School with annual cooking days, celebrating the culture of food and language together as a community. His involvement in every facet of School life has shaped the development and culture of the Junior School for two decades. A hallmark of Mr Sharpe’s leadership is his dedication and service to the pastoral care of students and families of the School. This is a fitting legacy he leaves with us and one we will sincerely treasure.”
I invite you to read Mr Sharpe’s section of his final Blue and Gold edition where I also extend my own sincere thanks to his input. His contributions to the development of the Junior School and its students and families are immense and will echo through time for many years to come. Thank you Mr Sharpe for your kindness and support of all of us.
With warmest regards and appreciation.

TGS 'Read My Lips' Lip Syncing Competition
Carrying on a remarkable tradition of top-class entertainment, on Friday, 15 March, with grand aplomb, Toowoomba Grammar School presented the 'Read My Lips' lip syncing competition.
The Assembly Hall was bursting at the seams as patrons struggled to find a seat and viewing position, such was the extraordinary audience turnout for the evening.
There was an exceptionally high standard of performances seen from the usual entries from Toowoomba's Houses, Prefects, Acting Academy (TiGAA) groups and novelty acts, and the School saw a record number of entries from other local Schools. These included St Mary's College, St Saviour's College, St Ursula's College, The Glennie School and Fairholme College.
Helping cast a critical, yet kind, eye over the proceedings was the judging panel consisting of Michael Hall, Noah Taylor, Jenny Bazley and the master of wit and the quick quip, Giles Murfin.
Place getters for the evening were acts Macintosh House in 3rd, Junior TiGAA in 2nd, and Five Big No Small deservedly winning 1st
place and a perfect score with a knockout, high-energy performance. Other winners included B and B, St Mary's/St Saviour's and Taylor House.
A terrific night of pure entertainment and fun was experienced by the audience and performers alike. Nobody left that night without feeling better than when they’d arrived.
Like a flash, we have reached the end of Term 1 and what a term it has been! It has been wonderful to see the TGS Army Cadets' eager faces and feel the buzz of excitement in the planning of activities, camps and adventurous events. As Term 1 draws to a close, we switch our focus to ANZAC Day (Thursday 25 April) and take a moment to reflect on this term's highlights and the wonderful opportunity provided to the members of TGS ACU through the Australian Army Cadet program.
Recruit Open Day
In the words of an ancient Chinese proverb, “If you tell me, I will listen. If you show me, I will see. If you let me experience, I will learn." This certainly rings true with the TGS Army Cadet Recruit Open Day, with interested boys and girls provided the opportunity to listen, see, touch and experience what the Army Cadets have to offer. Thank you to the staff and cadets who came in on the weekend to make this day as great as possible. The catapults and camouflage cream were definitely the favourites of the day!
Recruit Training Day
What do you do with the opportunities presented to you? For the TGS Army Cadets, they get in and get the job done... and have a great time doing it! The Recruit Training Day is a highlight of the Term 1 calendar as the recruits receive their uniforms and 'Go Green!' In 2024, TGS ACU issued 20 sets of Disruptive Pattern uniforms to the recruits and 45 sets of the new Australian Multicam uniforms to all the cadets, as we transition into the new uniforms while aligning with the ADF. The new uniforms will be on display at all future parades and activities.
Weapons Training Simulation System
The Weapons Training Simulation System facility at Swartz Barracks, Oakey is the current in-service shooting range for defence weapons. Cadets are able to fire the current rifle used by the Australian Army, the F89 Austeyr, in a simulated range. This allows the ADF instructors direct and accurate information on the cadet's aim and positioning, hit score and zeroing which is then relayed to the cadet for them to improve. TGS ACU is lucky enough to use this facility four times annually, and after the first round the scores for ‘Best Shot’ are closer than ever.
Annual Photographs and Dining In Night
In 2024, the decision was made to move the Dining In Night to the end of Term 1 as a celebration for the cadets who completed their first full term at TGS Army Cadets. The night was enjoyed by all, as the promise of a nice hot meal quickly overtook the miserable weather outside! The Dining In Night is a tradition that can be traced back to the time of the Vikings, who held formal ceremonies to honour and celebrate battles and heroes. Whilst TGS's Dining In Nights are slightly tamer with no open fires, swords and slabs of red meat, the lingering customs of raising toasts, commemorating the Fallen and fostering of camaraderie and esprit de corps is still rampant.
The 2024 Dining In Night was made even more special with the appointment of the first TGS ACU Regimental Sergeant Major, Warrant Officer Class 1 Erik Sheppard who was awarded his rank and pace stick by the 16th Battalion Commanding officer MAJ (AAC) Gary MacLachlan. Thank you to the staff and families that made this event possible.
Making History
As mentioned above, during the Dining In Night a very special presentation was made with Warrant Officer Class 1 Erik Sheppard appointed as TGSACU’s first Battalion RSM. It is believed that WO1 Sheppard is indeed the first cadet to wear the rank of WO1 in TGS Cadet history. WO1 Sheppard takes the reins as 16th Battalion (School-based units) RSM, the largest of all the SQLD Cadets Battalions putting him in charge of over 700 cadets from Schools, which includes The Anglican Church Grammar School, The Southport School and St Paul's Anglican College. It is an honour and privilege to add this achievement to the TGS Army Cadet history books.
The Glennie Fair and TGS Open Day
An integral part of the TGS Army Cadet experience is working closely with the girls' from Fairholme College and The Glennie School. The relationship between TGS ACU and the girls' schools has just about cracked 25 years - and is still going strong! The ability to build positive relationships and foster the character development of teenagers of both genders is a very important element of the Army Cadet program. Being part of The Glennie Fair and TGS Open Day is seen by Army Cadets as a great recruiting opportunity.
Exercise Dangerzone
Your mission if you choose to accept it: Deploy to Pineapple Island and recover the remnants of a downed civilian aeroplane. All you have is the equipment on your back and what you find in the wilderness. Search, locate and recover items from the aeroplane and return them to the safe location. Reports of opposing forces and feral animals are current and you will need to remain vigilant for thieves, lava fields and piranha-infested creeks. Good luck and watch out for the mysterious Pineapple Man who may also be located on the island.
National Servicemen’s Association Australia Memorial Service
In 1965, the imminent threat of war led to the Australian Government resurrecting the defunct National Service scheme with the adoption of a ‘Birthday Ballot’. All 20 year old Australian men had to register for the ballot, with a random selection chosen to enlist in National Services with the possibility of being conscripted to fight overseas. Between 1965 to 1972, 63,700 men were drafted into the Army with 15,000 Australian conscripts sent to Vietnam. 200 'Nashos' never returned home. Each year, TGS Army Cadets are honoured to remember these brave young men and the sacrifice they gave without question or complaint. Lest We Forget.
As you can see, there is never a dull moment for a TGS Army Cadet. Over the holiday period, we have two cadets representing SEQLD at the RSM – Australia’s Drill Competition in Canberra and two cadets participating in the prestigious National Adventure Training Award in Tasmania. TGS ACU wishes these cadets the best of luck and we know you will do us proud. Happy Easter and have a safe holiday.
GPS Football
Term 2 Football is nearly upon us! It's time to prepare for Round 1 against BSHS (at home) on Saturday 20 April.
The first training session for Term 2 will occur at 3:30pm on Tuesday, 16 April across all fields. Most A and B Squads will train on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons with all other teams generally training on a Monday and Wednesday. The Junior School Club teams will train after School on a Monday and during School on a Friday. Boys across who finished in the C/D Teams in 2023 should plan to start in those teams next Term, especially if they have not attended any pre-season training.
Year 7 boys will all train together on Tuesday and Thursday in Week 1 to be placed into their teams.
Draft Schedule BSHS (at Home) on Saturday, 20 April 2024
All fixtures will be posted on Clipboard prior to our home game against BSHS. At present, our Year 5 and Year 6 teams will play away at Brisbane Grammar School (BSHS do not have Junior Teams). Trustees Oval will be given more time to recover following the programmed rebuild and re-turf of the Southern end of the oval.
The Grading Process
Parents are asked to remain patient with the grading process of their son's starting team in the GPS Football pyramid. Our experience over the years has ensured that boys will find their level very quickly and any selection errors will be corrected following the first game. All boys can rise through the football grades, depending on their capacity to grow as a player and an athlete. As always, attitude and behaviour trump all else.
Parents are reminded that the School has a Football/Futsal Selection Policy which was endorsed in 2024, noting:
Team selection is primarily based on a player’s observed performance during training sessions and matches. Coaches will assess a player's current skill level including their first touch, passing and receiving, striking the ball and individual ball mastery in one-on-one situations.
Boys will also be assessed on their ability to control the ball with their head, chest and thigh. Players are encouraged to consistently improve their technique, speed and fitness throughout the season. Goalkeepers will be selected on their athletic ability as well as their courage and technical application as the last line of defence.
Regular attendance at both training sessions and matches is essential. Players are expected to attend all scheduled training sessions and games.
The player's attitude during training and games is a crucial factor in team selection. Positive behaviour, sportsmanship and a willingness to learn and work as a team are highly valued.
There will be team movement with players transitioning into higher or lower graded teams where their performance matches the ability of the team. It is natural for players to move up and down the football pyramid, with all players eventually finding their level.
Pre-Season Concludes
Pre-season has seen good attendance across many age groups, with a particularly strong turnout for Year 5 and Year 6 from the Junior School who set the bar high with their 6:15am starts.
In 2024, we extended pre-season options by playing a handful of Tuesday evening Futsal at USQ, with three teams in the U13, U15 and Open Competition. This six-week competition provided TGS with good opportunities to 'blow the cobwebs out' while getting into the thick of the action for the coming year.
TSS and IGS, two fellow GPS Schools, made a great effort in pre-season to meet TGS at Gatton Football Club for a couple of nights under lights, honing the team's pre-season preparations. Highlands College provided an opportunity for Year 8 and Year 9 teams to play a pre-season trial game on their Toowoomba field. Toowoomba Anglican School also provided TGS's Year 7s with an early season hit out - which provided great insights for our new players! During the Term 2 holidays, the Football Program will be busy with an array of activities planned.
Blazers Pre-Season Football Skills Academy
Kickstart Term 2 by attending the all-inclusive Blazers Pre-Season Football Skills Academy at TGS on Thursday, 4 April - Friday, 5 April.
