From the Headmaster
Dear TGS Community,
As we reach the midpoint of the term, I’ve taken some time to reflect on the many meaningful moments we’ve recently shared as a School community.
Last weekend, we were delighted to host the rescheduled Women of Grammar luncheon under a marquee on Old Boys’ Memorial Oval. Originally planned for March to coincide with International Women’s Day, the event was postponed due to Tropical Cyclone Alred and instead held on the eve of Mother’s Day. Despite the change of date, the event was a tremendous success. This event was a fitting tribute to the remarkable women who have shaped Toowoomba Grammar School over the past 150 years.
As part of our 150th anniversary celebrations, Hogans Jewellers generously presented a commemorative brooch to the School. Crafted by TGS Old Boy Lachlan Hogan (2003–08), the Jo Kinniburgh Brooch features the Grammar 150 logo and will be passed down from Headmaster to Headmaster as a lasting legacy of this milestone year. The gift is a powerful symbol of the Hogan family’s enduring connection to our School community, and Jo and I are deeply humbled by this honour.
On Wednesday, 7 May, we welcomed back two distinguished TGS Old Boys: Lachlan Stuart (2004–08) and Dr Robert Henderson (1981–85), along with current parent and Foundation Ambassador Mr Matt Butler. Lachie spoke with great enthusiasm and purpose to our Year 12 cohort ahead of the upcoming G150 Gift Run, which will be held on Wednesday, 28 May. The event will see Year 12 boys complete a 100km endurance relay, running 1km laps around Old Boys, Barbour, and Mills Ovals. Fifteen teams of ten will strategise and support each other to ensure every boy contributes. More information about the G150 Gift Run can be found later in this Blue and Gold Newsletter.
This week, we celebrated National Boarding Week, with a special focus during our Senior School Assembly on the dedicated staff who form the heart of our boarding program. From the Laundry and Dining Hall teams to the Health Centre, IT and Maintenance staff - and of course, the committed staff who live and work within the Boarding Houses. These individuals were acknowledged for the vital role they play in providing a home away from home for our boarders. Their resilience, professionalism and compassion are deeply valued. It was heartening to see our students express their gratitude for the authentic connections that exist between boarders and members of the broader TGS community.
Looking ahead, we are excited to welcome Simon Kuestenmacher, Director and Co-founder of The Demographics Group, to speak at our TGS Rising & Leading Breakfast on Wednesday, 21 May at The Armitage Centre. Simon will share his insights into the demographic and global trends shaping Australia’s future - perspectives highly valued by corporate, government and industry audiences. A prolific commentator, Simon is also the author of three books and manages the world’s largest Twitter account dedicated to maps and data, reaching over 35 million people each month. If you are interested in attending, tickets are available here.
Finally, I’m very much looking forward to our home fixtures tomorrow as we welcome Churchie to TGS. I encourage strong supporter attendance across all events - the presence of parents, students and staff genuinely lifts the boys and means a great deal to them. A reminder that the P&F will be running the Pavilion BBQ, so please feel free to stop by and enjoy a bite to eat. I wish everyone involved all the very best for a successful and enjoyable day.
Kind regards
Dr John C Kinniburgh
