Football Weeks 2 & 3
Week 2 was disrupted by the ANZAC Day public Holiday and the Bill Turner Cup Cluster Day on the Thursday, but this did not to deter us as we adjusted and prepared for our first trip on the road to Brisbane State High School on the Saturday.
UK/Spain Tour 2023 cancelled.
Following an expression of interest across Years 9,10 and 11, no less than 61 families showed an interest in being a part of the 2023 UK Spain Football Tour which was scheduled to depart in November 2023. The tour however did not gain sufficient interest with only 13 families submitting a deposit for the tour. Ultimately the price of the tour did not represent value for money, and we simply did not gain the minimum numbers to make the trip viable. Critical to the decision to cancel was the quoted cost of international flights which were being quoted by the tour provider at $3700 per passenger. As a result, the Football Department has determined to cancel the tour completely and will now look for options closer to Asia for activities in 2024.
Mini World Cup – Inverell – September Holidays
The School has once again decided to support our inclusion in the Mini-World Cup which has relocated back to Inverell with the competition running from 25-30 September. We will advertise this competition soon for interested families to register. Registrations will close on 4 June. The School intends on providing all teams with a coach and volunteer manager meaning the cost of entry will be between $250 and $350 per entrant. Parents interested in attending should secure their accommodation options now before local venues are exhausted.

Germany Tour 2023 – Departing in June 2023.
As you are aware, the School continues to be a part of the September Holidays Mini-World Cup competition in Inverell which results in some boys being selected for a tour to Germany. The 2022 tournament resulted in six boys being selected for the trip which departs on the 16 June 2023. Many boys have taken this opportunity to find a post-school opportunity to live and study in Germany following selection onto this tour. Former School graduate, Connor McLeod is now studying at Dortmund University in Germany and playing Football for Bochum Holzwickeder Football Club which is in the German state league.
This week, the tour organisers have advised of two vacant spots on the tour departing this June. Any boy from Years 10 to12 who is interested in being a part of this tour should contact the tour coordinator, Mr Heinrich Haussler, via his email at ffifthco@me.com or phone him on 0427210359 for further details about joining this 26-day tour of Germany which is quoted at under $9000. Please note that whilst this tour is not provided or officially endorsed by the School, the Football Department does recommend and supports this option as an established route for boys seeking football touring opportunities beyond school.
Missing Football Shirts – Please bring them back!
Last year the Football Supporters' Group purchased some special A Team Football shirts which have a bold blue stripe down the left-hand side. If you find one of these in your son’s possession, can you please hand them back in as some teams are in desperate need of a full strip.

Bill Turner Cup Cluster Day 2023
On 27 April, selected boys from Years 7 to 10 took part in the prestigious Bill Turner Cup cluster day which was held here at TGS for the second consecutive year. The Team is coached by Mike Mulvey (1st XI Head Coach) who uses the competition to judge the next generation of emerging football players.
The day itself provided the region's schools an opportunity to showcase their best talent in this important U15 National School Boy tournament.
The School has a long and proud history in the competition and the boys took the history of the event into consideration as they successfully navigated stage 1 of the tournament by finishing unbeaten in their group to qualify for the Darling Downs Semi-Final which was held on 10 May at Centenary Heights State High School.
Whilst there were many stand out performers on the day it is worth noting the selection of our Year 7 rising star, Iskcon Gyawali and Year 8 protégée, Ben Browett have shown early promise to be selected whilst still in their formative years here at TGS.

GPS Round 2 – v Brisbane State High School
BSHS away was an important day for the Football Program as we navigated our first away trip of the season. Logistically this is a huge operation and one requiring the co-operation of parents, boys, coaches and many more. Many boys in Years 5, 6 and 7 are still finding the bus journey a real adventure, although we are sure the novelty will wear off in time. 6:00am departure times on a cold Saturday morning continue to test the resolve of all involved, but ultimately provide boys with a competition that is second-to-none in the State.
BSHS produced a stunning event, and our boys were lucky to enjoy a blue sky to play their games on some well-prepared fields.
On the day, TGS were fortunate to win three fixtures, with notable successes for our 2nd XI, 11As and the 10A team.
11A Team following their emphatic 6-1 win against State High. Many of these boys are building towards their Year 12 with the aspiration to make the 1st Team in 2024
1st XI v BSHS
The 1st XI followed up from their opening round draw against Gregory Terrace with another accomplished performance against a well-prepared set of boys from Brisbane State High. Mike Mulvey was confident that his preparations and selection options would give BSHS much to worry about during this fixture.
The first half of the game saw TGS very much in the ascendancy with numerous chances being squandered through poor finishing. On any other day TGS could have gone into half time with the game in the bag. A second half rally by BSHS very nearly saw the game slip from our control and in the end, it was a scrappy Richard Dean tap in that stole the points and secured a win on the road.
Stand out performers for TGS were Taku Doherty and Luke Parish who between them ran BSHS off the park with their combative and intelligent control of the midfield battle.

GPS Round 3 v Brisbane Grammar School – Saturday, 6 May at Northgate.
Our round 3 fixture brought us a very challenging trip to Northgate where TGS were cast against a very strong Football School in BGS. The Northgate venue was immaculately presented, and we were fortunate to play on what are probably the finest sports fields in Queensland.
The day itself proved to be a difficult day all around with very few teams able to match the depth which BGS has on offer. Across the board, BGS showed the quality of their Football program with all age groups delivering high quality teams which were generally too strong for TGS.
Limited success on the day went to the 7As winning 2-1 and showing a strong response to their previous week's result. The 11Bs recorded a win and provided us with one of the few highlights on what will prove to be a defining fixture for the boys.
1st XI v Brisbane Grammar School
Head Coach Mike Mulvey is never afraid to make difficult calls, and this week chose to reward players who were outstanding at BSHS and also stand down players who failed to meet the very high standards expected of boys in the Football Program.
Tough love and life lessons are very much a part of the selection process designed to prepare boys for the realities of life in adult sport, work and life beyond School.
Brisbane Grammar School had prepared well for their home fixture and their whole team showed a quality, toughness and togetherness which was not anticipated. TGS boys were however unphased by the physicality of the game and both teams produced a tightly fought fixture in front of a partisan crowd.
The referee needed to be firm, and he controlled the game with panache and confidence in this high stakes Round 3 affair.
The early exchanges saw a technically adept BGS attempt to control possession whilst at the same time showing their versatility in delivering long balls from the back.
TGS Captain and 1st half goal scorer Bena Anderson moves the ball forward whilst Aaron Picker looks on
TGS showed composure on the ball as they sought to play out consistently from the back by taking the ball down both flanks through combination plays and intricate interchanges. Clear cut chances for both sides were few and far between but in the end, BGS got lucky and took a lead which could be considered against the run of play at the time.
TGS did not panic, and their steadfast self-belief saw Captain, Ben Anderson secure an equaliser before the interval following some excellent build up play. At half time, Head Coach Mike Mulvey gave many messages but most importantly inspired the boys to believe in their ability to match BGS and work to the very end to secure a just reward.
The second half was much in the same mould as the 1ST half and again a lack of concentration saw BGS score a second goal early in the half. TGS toiled to find openings and were hindered by the spoiling tactics of BGS who took every opportunity to waste time and run down the clock. All appeared lost, however with what was to be the last kick of the game, Luke Parish delivered a thundering whipped cross from a corner into the box which skimmed off the BGS defenders head into the top corner of the net to secure a dramatic last second equaliser.
The scenes of the boys were a sight to behold and our large contingent of supporters were ecstatic beyond words. In comparison, BGS were deflated, the contrast of emotion could not be starker.
Roll on Week 4.
