Dear TGS Families

With the conclusion of Term 3, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Toowoomba Grammar School community for the remarkable achievements and the collective dedication displayed throughout this busy term. As we prepare for a well-deserved break, there are a number of highlights, which reflect the essence of the School community.

A Term of Growth and Commitment

The term has been filled with many activities and engagements that have enriched our boys' lives. I would like to thank and express my gratitude to our dedicated staff members who have played a pivotal role in supporting and nurturing our students during this time.

This term was particularly significant for our Year 12 students who successfully completed their mock exams, a crucial step in their academic journey. Other year groups have engaged in a range of assessments, showcasing their dedication to academic excellence. As we wrap up this long and eventful term, it's clear that both our students and staff have earned a well-deserved break.

Celebrating Sportsmanship and Success

The final weekend of Term 3 marked the culmination of our co-curricular program with exciting fixtures against Ipswich Grammar School. It is with great pride that we extend our congratulations to all students who have participated in co-curricular activities, recognising their unwavering commitment to the School's program.

We are also thrilled to share some outstanding sports achievements with you. Our 1st V Basketball team finished an impressive 3rd overall and our 1st XV Rugby team earned a well-deserved equal 2nd place in the GPS Competition. These remarkable results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and the exceptional guidance provided by our Head Coaches, Mr Kabe Cicolini, and Mr Scott Gale.

I want to take a moment to commend not only our boys and staff but also our parents for their unwavering support and sportsmanship throughout the season. Your commitment to fair play and encouraging our athletes exemplifies the values we hold dear at our School. Well done to all for this fantastic achievement!

Our Premier Chess team also made us proud, finishing 6th in a highly competitive season. We witnessed great wins across the season and promising signs from our younger players, pointing to a bright future for our chess program.

In closing, I want to express my gratitude for your continued support and involvement in the TGS community. As we look ahead to Term 4, I am confident that we will continue to achieve great things together. We are excited to announce the beginning of a new phase for Toowoomba Grammar School: moving forward with the next stage of our inspiring Masterplan. The Masterplan project is aligned with our Strategic Plan 2022-2026 and our vision of giving Grammar boys the skills to be independent, well balanced and successful in life, responding well to challenges and achieving lifelong wellbeing.

As some of you may be aware, in 2022 we submitted an application to the Queensland Government’s Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, for Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) for our Masterplan. Formal, public consultation with key community members was undertaken as part of the process, including with the council and our local neighbours.

On 18 August 2023, we were notified by the Minister, the Honourable Steven Miles MP, of receiving the Ministerial Infrastructure Designation. This designation for Toowoomba Grammar School recognises the importance of capital and infrastructure works for our community. Under the Planning Act 2016, it also allows for more efficient delivery of these works by defining the project as ‘accepted development’, which means the project can be streamlined and avoids later development approvals which might otherwise be required.

So, what does this mean for Toowoomba Grammar School? This now means that we can move forward purposefully with preparing for the first and future phases of our Masterplan, including detailed planning, fundraising and execution of the Masterplan. Our Executive team and Board of Trustees are working together to confirm the phases and inclusions of the plan. The initial focus for the first phase of the project is on developing a state-of-the-art technologies facility to expand and consolidate the existing Industrial Design and Technologies (IDT) resources across the campus. In addition, the Masterplan also includes reference to the construction or refurbishment of renewed boarding facilities, assembly hall and library spaces, facilities for the Arts and early learning services.

Focusing on a design, engineering and technology centre in the first instance allows the School to:

• Expand these facilities to meet the increasing demand for these subjects.
• Consolidate facilities across the Junior and Senior School.
• Free up space in the Junior School to allow for increased specialist facilities.
• · Free up space in the north-eastern area of the campus for the future redevelopment of boarding facilities.

As the School looks to the future, we will have the potential to expand our IDT subject offerings to meet the needs and interests of our students, facilitate diverse options in the types of projects they can undertake and offer opportunities beyond the curriculum. With all technologies in one custom designed Design, Engineering and Technology Centre, we will be able to take a more multidisciplinary approach to technologies and agricultural offerings, to support our goals in preparing students for life beyond Toowoomba Grammar School.

This, and any new developments as part of the Masterplan, will deliver world-class, fit-for-purpose, modern facilities that also respect the heritage and beautiful leafy surrounds of the School. They are designed to anticipate the needs of the School in our rapidly changing global society and to give our current and future boys an outstanding educational environment and services. Phases with be delivered in a staged approach over several years; we will endeavour to schedule works during times that minimise disruption to our students, staff, families and neighbours as much as possible. The exact details on how your child will be affected by these changes will be communicated clearly as the Masterplan schedule becomes clearer.

Preparations are underway for the commemoration of Toowoomba Grammar School's 150th anniversary in 2025.

We are fortunate to benefit from Dr Kinniburgh's past involvement with Prince Alfred College during their 150th anniversary celebration in 2019. Our objectives for this upcoming celebration revolve around honoring the strong connection Toowoomba Grammar School has maintained with its community over the years. Consequently, we are making a dedicated effort to involve all stakeholders within our School community.

Recently, our Project President, Bronte and Project Manager, Jo, convened a meeting with a diverse group of representatives from various facets of the School. This was to foster collaboration and exchange ideas. We discussed innovative event concepts, strategies to enhance existing ones, brainstormed merchandise ideas, and, most importantly, deliberated on the enduring legacies we aspire to leave for the next 150 years at the School.

The Committee is looking to launch Grammar 150 to the public at next year’s Grammar Art Show. There will be a 2025 Grammar 150 Date Claimer produced so we will all have time to place some 'not-to-be-missed' events into our calendars.

Traffic during school pick-up times can be slow in this area. Senior School parents are encouraged to use other pick up / drop off areas available across the School where possible, for example Herries St and Margaret St Loop areas.

For parents using the Aquatic Centre area for collection, please do not queue as it blocks the right lane for through traffic near the Sports Centres. This is creating a bottle neck or even, at times, stopping all traffic movement as all vehicles using this entrance must move through this area to exit.

The School is considering future works in this area to improve traffic flow.

Understanding the growing challenges related to mental health among young people is an important consideration. Anxiety, depression and self-harm are all causes for concern. Factors like academic pressure, social media, family dynamics and societal expectations, are contributing to these issues. It's therefore crucial for parents and caregivers to take action early, remove the stigma around discussing mental health and offer accessible support to address these issues and the wellbeing of their children.

R U OK? contributes to suicide prevention year round by urging people to invest time in personal relationships and empowering informal support networks to identify signs of distress. We urge all families to take part, emphasising the value of genuine human relationships and reminding everyone to ask the important question, “Are you OK?”

Engaging in R U OK?Day activities goes beyond the classroom; it's a commitment to our students' overall development. By talking openly about mental health, schools create safe spaces where students feel understood, valued and supported. As parents and caregivers, you can contribute by fostering open conversations, normalising feelings and breaking down mental health stigmas. Participating in R U OK?Day promotes compassion and shows our dedication to the wellbeing of the entire school community, reaffirming that together, we can truly make a difference.

As the term comes to a close, the Year 12 students are finalising their QTAC and interstate university applications. These need to be completed by 28 September to avoid interstate late application fees and to ensure all necessary supporting documentation can be submitted on time. It is important to be aware of early closing dates for some courses at different universities such as Medicine, Creative Arts and Veterinary Science programs. The boys are encouraged to regularly check their personal emails for any correspondence from QTAC.

Some of our boys have already received early university offers or have been invited to apply for early offers, which is wonderful. All universities offer scholarships and I encourage the boys to spend some time over the break to research opportunities that may be available to them.

We congratulate many of the Year 12 students who have already secured full time apprenticeships for next year in a variety of trade and agricultural disciplines. We are very fortunate to have close relationships with industry across the Darling Downs and Western regions.

The Quality Indicators for Learning and Teaching (QILT) website assists students in making informed choices about their higher education options by bringing together survey data from all Australian universities, allowing students to compare student experience and job outcomes. Data is collected from over 400,000 students, graduates and employers who complete QILT surveys every year. Covering all study levels and both domestic and international students, QILT is regarded as the only comprehensive system of higher education surveys in Australia. All 41 Australian universities and approximately 90 non-university higher education providers take part in the QILT surveys. This means that students are able to compare the student experience, whether domestic or international, between universities, and also learn more about employment outcomes of the different institutions. I encourage you to visit ComparED to explore and compare institutions and study areas based on real life student experiences provided through the QILT surveys.

We’ve just enjoyed a very full Term 3. There have been so many wonderful events and activities that I hesitate to list them all for fear of missing one, but I will attempt a quick snapshot anyhow:

• Eisteddfod Instrumental performances
• 100 days of Prep celebrations
• Representative sports including Athletics, Cross Country, Rugby, Basketball and Football
• Charity events, Pyjama Day and Colour Run
• Book Week
• Father’s Day
• GPS and Club Sports
• House Games and U5-8 Swimming Carnival
• Parent / Teacher Meetings

All of this, of course, happens around the core learnings each day, where students have made tremendous progress across the term. This progress was particularly evident with our Promoting Literacy Development (PLD) program for spelling and reading. PLD provides regular data updates to inform the progress made and guide next steps for students. At the most recent parent / teacher meetings it was lovely to share this data with parents so they can see the development in their son’s spelling and reading. If you haven’t had the opportunity to meet with your son’s classroom teacher please take the opportunity early next term to request a meeting and hear how they are progressing as we lead into fourth term.

Our Year 6 leaders have been very active this term with a number of projects and initiatives they have led. The events we hold each year have been fabulous, such as Book Week and Pyjama Day, but also we've seen the return of the Year 6 Fair. Year 6 students connected their Humanities unit on economics, market forces and supply and demand to the Fair by making a simple business plan for their activity station for all boys in the Junior School to enjoy. When sourcing the supplies for this event, Year 6 students contributed a budget to purchase what they required, although they were encouraged to use materials they already had access to at home where possible – repurpose, reuse, recycle. It was a tremendous event, lots of fun for all the age groups, and the Year 6s did a wonderful job coordinating the experience. The Fair raised $940 which the Year 6 cohort will return to the Junior School in the form of a gift that will benefit the future students for 2024. Wonderful learnings came from the experience, and it was a lovely gesture from the cohort to the Junior School community.

Our Year 6 School Captains started a new initiative that may become a regular feature for Junior School captains into the future. Charlie and Arti have started a short interview segment called ‘Captain’s Chat’ where they interview members of our School community they feel the Junior School boys would be interested in hearing from. For their first episode, they interviewed two Year 12 students from the 1st XV Rugby team, George Griffiths and Richard Dean. It was a terrific interview with thoughtful questions like "how did they get started in rugby", "key highlights in their School rugby experience" and "advice for future rugby players". The episode is linked below. I look forward to viewing future episodes of Captain's Chat.

Also linked below is another short video the Captains supported which promotes the ‘adventure of TGS Junior School’, that we will share with our community leading into Grammar Boy for a Day next term. It’s a nice snapshot of the daily experience boys have in the Junior School and the connections they feel make school ‘an adventure’ each day. The video was choreographed by the Advancement Team together with lead performances by our Year 6 students.

Lastly, for the term ahead, after a well-deserved break, Term 4 is a slightly shorter term of eight weeks, full of activity and learning to finish off the year. As always, my sincere thanks again for your support this term. Your inclusion in all of what we do is immensely valued and is a significant part of why our occasions are so successful and enjoyable for everyone. Celebrating Success: Improved Spelling Results Through Phonics and Word Knowledge
We are thrilled to share some exciting news about the progress our students have made in their spelling abilities. We have continued to implement PLD (Promoting Literacy Development), a consistent and effective approach to teaching phonics and word knowledge, and the results have been remarkable.

The Power of Phonics and Word Knowledge
Scarborough’s Reading Rope demonstrates how the different strands of reading are all interconnected yet independent of one another and captures the complexity of learning to read. Phonics is the foundation of reading and spelling. Through a systematic and structured phonics program (PLD), our students have been mastering the essential skills needed to decode words and understand their meaning. This approach has empowered them to become more confident and accurate spellers. In addition to phonics, we've placed a strong emphasis on building word knowledge. This includes expanding vocabulary, learning about word families and patterns and exploring the origins of words. By understanding the building blocks of language, our students are better equipped to tackle even the most challenging words.

Measurable Improvement
We are thrilled to report a significant improvement in our students' results. Their performance in spelling assessments has shown steady growth, reflecting the effectiveness of our explicit phonics and word knowledge instruction. Here are just a couple of examples of the growth we are seeing from our Year 5 and Year 2 cohorts.

Confidence and Enthusiasm
Not only have our students become better spellers, but many have also developed a newfound enthusiasm for language. The boys have increased confidence in their writing abilities, which is a crucial skill they will carry with them throughout their academic journey.

Our commitment to providing a strong foundation in language and literacy will continue. We will build upon the success of our phonics and word knowledge program, ensuring that your son receives the most effective, evidence-based teaching. We are incredibly proud of our boys’ achievements and the dedication of our educators in making this progress possible. Thank you for a great Term 3. Club Football, Club Rugby, GPS Rugby, GPS Basketball and Athletics Mini-meets, as well as a range of sporting clubs, inter-school sport and trials, have meant a very busy term for all boys. We are blessed to have such wonderful coaches and a supportive parent body.

Under 5 - Under 8 Swimming Carnival
Last Friday, we celebrated the achievements of our Under 5 - Under 8 boys in swimming with our annual carnival. Boys have worked hard all year in their Learn to Swim weekly lessons and the performances they displayed at the carnival is a testament to their efforts and those of their amazing instructors.

Congratulations to all boys but of particular note are the following age champions:

Special congratulations must be given to Flynn Loch for an amazing day of racing. He broke records in every race he swam. We now have new records for the 50m Backstroke, 50m Freestyle, 50m Breaststroke, 50m Butterfly and 100m IM. Most records were set before Flynn was born. Congratulations Flynn on an exceptional effort.

Congratulations to Mackintosh House on winning the Spirit Trophy.

The Champion House for 2023 was Groom House. Well done!

GPS Athletics
The annual GPS Athletic Championships will be held on Friday, 20 October at QSAC. Information regarding this event will be sent to all boys who have been selected. We wish everyone good luck in this final GPS sporting event of 2023.

Congratulations to all boys who have competed in basketball, athletics, football or rugby this term. Your efforts on and off the field / court has been exemplary. Well done.

Thank You Volunteers!
Thank you to our hard-working volunteers for helping at the recent Father’s Day stall, and to everyone who donated items. Your contributions are always greatly appreciated. The boys had a ball doing their shopping, and we loved helping them.

Thank you also to everyone who came out to help serve up the Meal Deal before the Colour Run on Thursday. It was a great day for the boys, and a perfect way to finish up Term 3.

A work of late capitalistic joy fused with a Choose Your Own Adventure novel, A Thousand Points from Zero is a jet-black comedy that looks into the future that could be awaiting us just over the virtual horizon. This is a story that isn’t a dystopian warning, but one that jumps into the logical conclusions already made by the interference of Big Tech on young people's neurochemistry and the commodification of the human experience today.

If you weren't at the Empire Theatre's Armitage Centre on August 23, 2023, then you missed a thought-provoking performance laid on by our Senior TiGAA. As in past years, Senior TiGAA has produced a work of outstanding quality that is difficult to put into words. Not only that, but they all backed it up six days later to perform a cut down version at the USQ as part of Queensland Theatre's 'The Scene Project'. Their performance and aesthetic have earned them a poster feature for Queensland Theatre in 2023. A massive effort for all involved and an unforgettable experience.

Without a Doubt, a band consisting of Toowoomba Grammar School students, Sam Freer, Hamish Walker and Kurtis Goodger, along with Nia Saleh from Fairholme College and Cade Geiger from St. Mary's College have taken out the TGS Battle of the Bands for the second consecutive year.

The first day of spring was our annual Battle of the Bands where we hosted students from around Toowoomba as they fought it out for bragging rights and their names on the esteemed B.O.B. trophy. Only one point separated each of the first four bands in what was a hard-fought competition featuring music played at the highest of standards. Winner's Without a Doubt defended their title and fended of challenges from The Glennie School Jazz Band, Cade Geiger and the 44 Pounders and TGS RnB Band.

Also featuring on the night were RnB Too, TAS Rock Band and Dressed 4 Success, who are an originals band fronted by Year 10 student, Darcy Templeman. They will certainly be one to watch for next year.

A big thanks to highly regarded composer and performer, Garry Smith, a TGS Old Boy who adjudicated on the night. Great work to all involved.

A big congratulations to Year 9 cellist, Joshua Green who has been selected to take part in the Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program. Josh, who recently gained a 2nd place in his section at the Toowoomba Eisteddfod, will be forming part of the String Orchestra and will perform at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music on October 1 in a concert starting at 3:00pm. What a wonderful effort from Josh!

The final Senior School assembly for Term 3 featured a wonderful performance from Year 11 student, Bertie Mansfield. Bertie, who won the Years 11 and 12 solo trumpet section at the recent Toowoomba Eisteddfod, performed a smoking rendition of Cookin' with Gas. He has become a fine young trumpeter and certainly one to watch for at our upcoming Take Note Concert & Performing Arts Awards on October 16.

Congratulations to Year 12 student, Ruben Fitton who recently completed his Grade 8 AMEB exam in Classical Voice. He received an A+ which is an absolutely outstanding result. A big thank you to Wendy Evans, our esteemed Teacher in Charge of Music, who accompanied Ruben and assisted in guiding him through his journey. Well done Ruben and Mrs Evans.

The end of season Rugby Awards were held on Monday afternoon, with the following students recognised for an outstanding season.

Congratulations to all the players, coaches and volunteers and a special thank you to the parents for your dedication during the year, the rugby program would not be possible without your support.

We look forward to doing it all again next year.

He has worked as a sport psychologist at nine Olympic Games and more than 100 other international events, and delivered over 30 keynote addresses at international conferences.

Prof. Terry is Dean of the Graduate Research School and Professor of Psychology at the University of Southern Queensland. He holds degrees from London University (UK), the University of Victoria (Canada), and completed his PhD in the Institute of Social and Applied Psychology at the University of Kent (UK).

We understand that from time to time and for a wide variety of reasons, families will make the decision to leave TGS. As a School, we will always strive to work with families to ensure an outcome that is in the best interests of each boy.

It is also important to note and as a reminder to all families enrolled at Toowoomba Grammar School, our conditions of enrolment clearly stipulate that at least 10 weeks’ written notice of the withdrawal must be provided to the School.

As per the School’s Conditions of Enrolment, all tuition and fees must be paid for the Term in which the notice of withdrawal expires. For situations where 10 weeks’ notice is not provided, the following Term’s fees are payable.

This 10 weeks’ written notice period also applies to boys changing their enrolment status from boarder to dayboy.

If you are considering withdrawing your son, we would strongly encourage you to contact his Head of House, the Head of Junior School, the Head of Senior School or the Deputy Headmaster.
